A minimum of thirteen people killed and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were executed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and running of these national projects.
